Third district Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC) today voted to pass H.R. 8, the Death Tax Repeal Permanency Act of 2003. H.R. 8 was approved by a vote of 264 to163.
H.R. 8 would permanently repeal the estate tax, which is commonly known as the "death tax." Congressman Jones has long been an advocate of ending the death tax.
"I am proud to vote to put the IRS's grim reaper out of business. No American should be forced to pay up to 55 percent of their savings, their business, or their farm in taxes when they die," Jones said. "This bill is sign of respect for families who have enough to think about when there is a death in the family. Paying the federal government should not be part of the grieving process."
"The death tax discourages savings and investment and punishes those Americans who work hard throughout their lives to pass on something to their children," Jones said. "The federal government should encourage small businesses and family farms, not create obstacles for them."
