JONES VOTES TO FUND NATIONAL PARKS AND CANCER RESEARCH

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) voted in favor of two separate measures that would provide funding for federal cancer research and reopen national parks and monuments.  The Research for Lifesaving Cures Act would fund the National Institutes of Health (NIH), allowing the agency to continue its life-saving work, while the Open Our National Parks and Museums Act would fund the National Park Service and restore public access to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Cape Lookout National Seashore, the World War II memorial, and all other units of the national park system.

“This legislation would ensure that the Obama administration cannot continue politicizing the government shutdown by blocking the public’s access to the national parks and memorials they own,” said Congressman Jones.  “Individuals, particularly veterans, who have traveled to visit these landmarks should not be denied access to them.”

“Furthermore, funding the NIH will prevent any delay in medical research – including life-saving cancer treatments – that could improve the health and quality of life of Americans of all ages.  I am now calling on my colleagues in the Senate to approve this common-sense proposal, which could potentially save lives across the country.”

Both of these measures passed the House with bipartisan support and will now go to the Senate for further consideration.
