Jones Mourns The Moral Decay Of America

Aug 21, 2003
Third District Congressman Walter Jones today issued a statement regarding the controversy surrounding the Ten Commandments monument in Alabama's state courthouse. A federal judge had recently ruled that the monument violates the constitution's ban on government establishment of religion and must be removed from its public place in the rotunda. The deadline for the monument's removal was this morning yet the monument still stands. Chief Justice Roy Moore has said he would not comply with the federal ruling. Earlier this morning, Moore's authority was challenged once again as all eight of his associate justices overruled the Chief Justice ordering that his Ten Commandments monument be removed from public display. Close colleagues of Judge Moore's immediately contacted Congressman Jones, who has stood passionately in favor of the Chief Justice's position to keep the Ten Commandments on display. Upon hearing the news, Congressman Jones had this to say: "This is just one more assault on the values of this nation. To think that our nation's lawmakers would ever turn their backs on the very moral foundation of our country is just heartbreaking. The Ten Commandments are simple, straightforward guidelines that are respected by men and women of all faiths. Our Founding Fathers used these Biblical standards as an outline for our Constitution and now, just a few hundred years later, Americans have deemed the display of these guiding principles a violation of the very document they were used to create. I find that disturbingly ironic," Congressman Jones said today. " It is my hope and my fervent prayer that those who are leading the charge to remove this historical monument come to their senses before it is too late. To permanently eradicate such a display would be just one more removal of a brick in the wall of the morality of our country. How much longer will it be before that wall comes tumbling down? I support Chief Justice Roy Moore wholeheartedly and applaud the courageous stand he has taken to protect the values of America." Congressman Jones has emerged in Washington as one of the most outspoken Members of Congress concerned with religious and civil liberties. After ten years in Congress, protecting the rights of those seeking to uphold the moral foundations of America has become one of Congressman Jones' top priorities.
