JONES CO-CHAIRS NEW "BUY AMERICAN" CAUCUS TO REINVIGORATE DOMESTIC MANUFACTURING

Apr 15, 2010 Issues: Economy and Jobs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – This week U.S. Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) joined Congressman Christopher Murphy (CT-5) in announcing the founding of the Congressional Buy American Caucus.  The two representatives will serve as co-chairs of the caucus, which aims to strengthen laws that require the federal government to make buying American-made products a priority.  Jones believes the federal government has not done enough to enforce and update the Buy American Act, which governs federal procurement and has been on the books for over 75 years.

“It is time we bring manufacturing jobs back to the American people,” said Jones.  “Taxpayer dollars do not need to be spent on foreign products when an American company can manufacture the same high-quality goods right here.  We need to remember what made this country great and support our own products.”

The Buy American Caucus will play a leadership role in achieving bi-partisan consensus on how to strengthen the Buy American Act in order to reduce domestic unemployment and stimulate job creation.

“Unfortunately, many of our national laws like unfair trade agreements and loose rules on federal procurement have had a devastating effect on our domestic manufacturing base,” said Jones.   “America cannot retain its status as a superpower if it is dependent on foreign countries like communist China for the bulk of goods we consume.  One part of the solution is to do a much better job of making sure U.S. taxpayers dollars are spent on products made by American workers.”
