JONES ASKS FEDS TO HOLD PUBLIC MEETING IN DARE COUNTY ON OFFSHORE OIL AND GAS

Jan 25, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) is asking the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) to hold a public scoping meeting in Dare County, North Carolina regarding the federal government’s proposal to conduct an offshore oil and gas lease sale between 2019-2024.  His request follows a similar request that the Dare County Board of Commissioners made of BOEM yesterday.

Currently, the only scheduled public meeting in North Carolina is set for February 26, 2018 in Raleigh, a location roughly 150 miles from Dare County. As Congressman Jones pointed out in a letter to BOEM, for many of those who live on the coast, “a drive to Raleigh on a weeknight is a 3 or 4 hour trip each way. As a result, I fear many will not be able to attend.”

Congressman Jones concluded, “It is vitally important for the federal government to receive the input of citizens who stand to be most impacted by this proposal. Therefore, I respectfully encourage you to grant the county’s request for a public meeting in Dare County.”

Congressman Jones’ letter to BOEM, as well as the Dare County Board of Commissioners’ request are attached.
