JONES ANNOUNCES GRANT FOR KEY INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECTS IN EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA

Jun 7, 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – This week, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) was thrilled to announce a $147 million grant awarded to the North Carolina Department of Transportation for improvements to U.S. 70 (future I-42) and I-95 in the eastern part of the state - the largest infrastructure project in North Carolina. Last year, Congressman Jones wrote to Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao in strong support of the projects.

“These advances to Eastern North Carolina’s highways will have a large impact for years to come,” said Congressman Jones. “By expanding U.S. 70, we can better serve our military, boost the economy, expand emergency evacuation routes, and ease the commute of your average driver. Thank you to the North Carolina delegation for supporting these projects.”

The full letter to Secretary Chao is attached.

Background:
The US 70 (future I-42) portion of the Project completes the last two remaining gaps between I-40 and the eastern terminus of the Havelock Bypass to bring the entire stretch of road up to freeway standards. This will be the culmination of a decades-long effort to develop this facility to serve Eastern North Carolina. US 70 serves as an evacuation route during severe storms.
