JONES STATEMENT ON MILITARY CONSTRUCTION AND VETERANS AFFAIRS FUNDING

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a House vote today, Third District Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC) voted in favor of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2010, legislation that includes $810 million in funding for military construction at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejuene, Marine Corps Air Stations Cherry Point and New River, and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The legislation passed the House by a vote of 415 to 3.

“I am very grateful that the Congress and the Department of Defense have worked together to identify and support funding for these high priority projects for the 3rd Congressional District’s military installations,” Congressman Jones said.

“I’m also pleased to support the vital funding for veterans included in this bill – such as Veterans Health Administration funding for mental health care, homeless veterans assistance, and practices to improve access to care for veterans in rural areas. Caring for our veterans is a cost of war and part of honoring America’s commitment to those who have made such incredible sacrifices for our country,” Jones said. “I am also pleased that an amendment was included in the bill to require the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to submit a report to Congress detailing the current and planned use of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in VA medical facilities. In my work in the House Armed Services Committee, I’ve been very vocal about HBOT’s demonstrated potential for helping our nation’s injured service members, who deserve the best treatment available.”
