JONES DENOUNCES PRESIDENT OBAMA’S REVERSAL OF BUSH STEM CELL POLICY
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a White House ceremony earlier today, President Barack Obama signed an executive order to allow federal funding for human-embryo destroying research. The order reverses a policy instituted by President George W. Bush in August 2001, which allowed funding for research on already-existing stem cell lines, without encouraging further destruction of human life.
Congressman Jones’ statement on the new executive order follows below:
“It is unconscionable that our government would require taxpayers to pay for this controversial type of research that is opposed by millions of Americans – especially when there are ethical alternatives using non-controversial adult stem cells.”
“I cannot support research that requires the destruction of human embryos. As long as I have the privilege to represent the people of Eastern North Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives, I will continue working to protect the unborn and restore respect for the sanctity of human life.”
Congressman Jones has been a consistent supporter of pro-family and pro-life legislation throughout his eight terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. The Family Research Council, based in Washington D.C., has honored Jones with their annual "True Blue" award each year since its inception in 2000. The award recognizes members of the House and Senate who have exhibited extraordinary leadership and dedication to the defense of family, faith, and freedom. The Christian Coalition has also awarded Jones the "Friend of the Family" award for his faithful commitment to strong family values.
