JONES COSPONSORS COMMON SENSE ENGLISH ACT
Washington, D.C. - Third District Representative Walter B. Jones is an original cosponsor of H. R. 4464 – a bill introduced this week by Congressman Tom Price (R-GA) that would ensure that an employer may require employees to speak English while engaged in work.
In 2006, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed more than 200 lawsuits against employers who implemented “English in the Workplace” policies. The EEOC has sued the Salvation Army for implementing a policy which gives employees a year to learn English.
“It is important for people living in the United States to speak and understand English. Consistent use of the English language in the work place is often essential for preventing misunderstandings or accidents and maintaining good order and morale,” Congressman Jones said. “Making sure America’s employers have the freedom to require their employees to speak English while on the job is just common sense.”
