“Whenever the hard budget votes have had to be cast, Congressman Jones always has come down on the side of our men and women in uniform.” - Gen. Mike Carns, USAF, Ret., MOAA Chairman of the Board “Whenever the hard budget votes have had to be cast, Congressman Jones always has come down on the side of our men and women in uniform.” - Gen. Mike Carns, USAF, Ret., MOAA Chairman of the Board At a ceremony yesterday evening on Capitol Hill, Third District Representative Walter B. Jones (R-NC) received The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) Col. Arthur T. Marix Congressional Achievement Award for championing legislation to protect retired military families against disproportional health fee increases. Along with Rep. Chet Edwards (D-TX), Congressman Jones introduced bipartisan legislation, the Military Retirees Health Care Protection Act, to protect military beneficiaries against large, unwarranted fee increases for military health coverage. “I am extremely honored by this recognition,” Congressman Jones said. “We as a nation, and those of us in Congress, should never forget that a promise made should be a promise kept. The Military Retirees Health Care Protection Act is about offering protection for the men and women who are willing to protect our nation from its enemies, and keeping promises to those who have promised to put themselves in harm’s way when called upon. The families of our armed forces deserve consistent health care benefits.” The Colonel Arthur T. Marix Congressional Leadership Award is named after Colonel Arthur T. Marix, USMC (Retired), who founded MOAA in 1929 and served as Chairman from 1929 until 1944. The award is given to members of Congress, without regard to party affiliation, who distinguish themselves in protecting the rights and interests of uniformed services members, their families and survivors. “Walter Jones has been a staunch and consistent supporter of military people issues,” said MOAA Chairman of the Board, General Mike Carns, USAF (Retired). “He personified the spirit of bipartisanship in joining Congressman Edwards as the lead, and very vocal, cosponsor of the Military Retirees Health Care Protection Act. And whenever the hard budget votes have had to be cast, Congressman Jones always has come down on the side of our men and women in uniform.” “We are privileged to recognize great Americans who support a strong national defense and always will be counted as friends of those in uniform,” said MOAA President, Vice Admiral Norbert R. Ryan, Jr., USN (Retired). The Military Officers Association of America is the nation's largest association of military officers. With about 360,000 members from every branch of service – including active duty, retired, National Guard, Reserve, and former officers and their families – MOAA is a powerful force speaking for a strong national defense and representing the interests of military officers at every stage of their careers.
